Nicholas Joseph Fury is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer/artist Jack Kirby and writer Stan Lee, he first appeared in *Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos* #1 (May 1963) as the leader of an elite World War II squad.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Samuel L. Jackson portrays Nick Fury as the former Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division). This version of Fury is instrumental in assembling the Avengers. His first appearance in the MCU was in a post-credits scene in the *Iron Man* movie.
